Make Enhance and Improve your chucks

38mm (1.5in) jaws for Axminster chucks

by Frank Clark RPT

In my opinion one of the shortcomings of the Axminster 4 jaw chucks is that there are no jaws available giving a 38mm (1.5in.) diameter compression mode except on the middle set of the O’Donnell jaws. With the nylon jaws the cut occurs where the fixing bolts go through the jaws. If, like me, you prefer to keep the workpiece as close as possible to the headstock bearings one solution to this problem is to make a set of jaws from 6mm thick Perspex to fit the 100mm wood jaw plates. The holes in the wood jaw plates can be tapped 0.25in. BSF for fixing the Perspex jaws with countersunk 0.25in. BSF bolts. Detailed instructions can be provided to anyone who is interested in making a set of jaws.

Vicmarc chuck improvements

by Gregory Moreton RPT

If you have a Vicmarc VM100 or VM120 and use different jaw sets Its is well worth getting an extra set of slides for each jaw set. To make the slides removable you will first need to remove the split pin stop from the No 4 slide. First remove the back plate of the chuck and using a blunt nail (ground flat) or broken drill bit etc of the appropriate size, knock out the pin. Now attach all your jaw sets to a separate set of slides and as long as you allways put the No 1 in first and follow in order (ie 1, 2, 3, 4) it does not matter which channel you use.You can also use an old coach bolt (M8 or M10) in your power driver to remove the slides more quickly. This may invalidate the manufacturers warrenty so do so at your own risk. Also note that for safety it is advbisable to have at least 2 threads of the scroll holding each jaw.
